31st August 2010

Our next walk will be on September 26th, Finally! :)

First of all , I must apologize for how long its been since our last event/walk. The summer has been busier than I could have expected. On top of all that, I took a lengthy vacation in the month of August.  The good news is I’ve scheduled our next walk. The details are below.

OLD ERIE CANAL TRAIL
Sunday, September 26th at 10:00am
Meet at the Ryder Park Pavilion next to Dewitt Town Hall(The park and the town hall share a parking lot)

I think this will be a great walk for everyone because its a very level straight trail and you can all choose how far you would like to walk. We will meet at the Ryder Park Pavilion at 10am sharp. The pavilion is covered with picnic tables.  If you need assistance with specific directions or don’t understand something in the map, feel free to email me at glenn@thegreyhoundwalkingclub.com .

If you are planning on attending, please post a comment below. I always like to get a rough idea of how many people and hounds will be attending.  Also, I haven’t gotten any new hound pictures in quite some time. Please, help me fill my picture page and submit your pictures today! Up at the top of my website you will see a button that says “submit your pictures”. Its quick and easy!

Good Dog Park Event was a Greyt success!

Thanks to everyone who attended! We had a bigger than expected turnout and best of all, the rain held off for the entire event.  It was a wonderful morning and it seemed that everyone had a great time. Also, a special thanks to Leiko and all the people at Onondaga Lake Parks for being nice enough to let use their park for our event. Hopefully this can be a regular thing for our club.
For some pictures from today, click here. I also have a short video below. If you have any pictures you would like to share with the club, please use the SUBMIT PICTURES button at the top of the website. I personally would love to see all the pictures that people took throughout the day.

Health Concerns for the event on July 25th.

Many people have expressed concern over the tidiness of the Dog Park. I share these concerns but I want to assure everyone that our hounds will be safe. We will be on the small dog side which is always a lot cleaner. Plus, I will be getting there at least an hour early to make sure the grounds are up to snuff. If there aren’t, I will do the cleanup myself.  Onondaga Parks is also going to make sure that the grounds are spick and span before they close the night before.  Again, as a precaution, its always good to make sure your hound is up to date on all their shots and preventatives (flea, tick, heartworm, worms). That’s just good common sense even if they weren’t attending a dog park event.

I really appreciate the feedback. Please continue to email with any questions and remember to post a comment in the event page if you plan on coming. Lets get a big turnout! This is going to be alot of fun!

6th July 2010

Our next walk is announced. Let you hound run free safely! Interested?

Information on our next walk:

Sunday, July 25th from 9am-10am.(Take note of the earlier start time)
Wegmans Good Dog Park
Onondaga Lake Park
2500 Cold Springs, Liverpool, NY 13090

Directions can be found HERE.

Well, after some doing and negotiation, our next event will be held at the Good Dog Park in Liverpool. Instead of walking our hounds, we will have one whole side of the dog park to ourselves. Yes, the kind folks at Onondaga Parks are allowing our club private access to one of the two fenced in areas for an hour. This is all happening FREE OF CHARGE! This means our hounds can play, explore and run free while us humans can hang out, watch the fun and socialize. I want to make this an event to remember. I will have a table setup at the entrance promoting our club,  and most importantly, promoting Greyhound adoption. If any of the local adoption groups would like to have literature on that table, please feel free to email me.  I am also going to try and get one of the local TV stations there to cover the event!  We will also be doing some raffles for Greyhound Walking Club Merchandise.
In order to make the event as incredible as I know it can be, I will need your help. Please tell as many Greyhound owners as you can. The bigger the turnout the better. We want to really show people just how tight nit our club is and just how passionate we are about our hounds. So please, spread the word!

There are just a couple additional rules that need to be followed at this event:

#1. This event is just for Greyhounds and their owners. I know we do allow other breeds at our walks but I would like to keep this event to just our Greyhounds.
#2. When entering the fenced in area, your Greyhound must be wearing all their proof of Rabies vacacination tags.
#3. All Greyhounds must wear a muzzle when off leash in the fenced in area. This is one that I am not so happy with but its strictly for the safety of the dogs. We  know Greyhounds pretty much all get along. However, in an environment where they are allowed to roam and play free, you never know what could happen. My hope is we can make this Good Dog Park event a regular occurance so lets make sure our hounds are on their best behavior.

That’s it! I hope you are as excited about this event  as I am. It should be a great time and also give us the opportunity to help promote Greyhound adoption. If at 10am, people feel like having an actual walk around the park with our hounds, we could certainly do that.  If anyone has any additional ideas for that day or questions please don’t hesitate to email me at glenn@thegreyhoundwalkingclub.com. As always, please leave a comment at the end of this post if you plan on attending.

A great day for a walk!

Our walk this afternoon was perfect. Not too hot for the hounds and no rain for the entire walk. Thanks to everyone who attended. We had 3 more people this time, so hopefully next time we can get a few more. I would like to see our club grow to at least 15 hounds per walk. It can be done!! :)   Watch soon for the next walk announcement.  As most of you heard today, I am working with the Onondaga Parks people so we can have our next walk/get together at the Good Dog Park in Liverpool. My hope is that we can have it all to ourselves for an hour. Our hounds could roam free and we could have more time to socialize and get to know one another.   Click here  for pictures of todays walk.

We are excited to announce our next walk! – Sunday, June 13th

The Greyhound Walking Club of Central New York would like to announce its second greyhound walk of 2010. Here is the info you will need:

Sunday, June 13th 2010 at 10am
Mill Run Park
Manlius, NY

For those new to the walks, please review the FAQ page on the site.  This is a very easy trail and good for all hounds and people alike.  There is one incline but after that, its very level. My wife and I walked it last weekend.   The total loop is about a mile but we can extend it if we want to with other trails.

Please click here for a google map of the park. From there you can click on directions.  We will be meeting up at the main parking lot in the park.  If it does prove to be a bad weather on the 13th (thunderstorms, heavy rain, extreme cold or heat), I will post something on the site 2 hours before the walk indicating we will cancel the walk and reschedule. Hopefully this will not happen.

If you need assistance with specfic directions or don’t understand something in the map, feel free to email me at glenn@thegreyhoundwalkingclub.com .

If you are planning on attending, please post a comment below. It would be nice to know roughly how many people are coming.

Keep those pictures of your hounds coming! Submit them at the top of the page by clicking on SUBMIT YOUR PICTURES.

Saying goodbye to a friend

Yesterday our beloved maggie had to be put down because of her battle with cancer. There will never be another greyhound like her. My heart is crushed and I never thought I could love an animal as much as I loved her. She got me through some of the darkest times in my life. She could always make me feel better whenever I was blue. It wouldn’t take much. Just a hop on the couch, her head in my lap and that look that she gave me. The look that told me everything was going to be alright. Ya know what, she never let me down. It was always alright. She was smart like that. I felt such a strong bond with her from the day she came into our home. She was also the most gentle, sweetest dog in the world.

Farewell my friend. You will always be remembered and I will think of you often.
