Who? You! Me! EVERYONE!
What? Weekend walks.
Where? Different places in Central New York.
When? Once a month. Usually on Sundays at 10:00 am.
How? Check for the latest walk post on our website. No reservations required but we would like you to sign so we can get an idea of who is coming.
Why? Why not? Its fun. It’s good for you and your dog, and the dogs LOVE it!
What about bad weather? We walk year round. Use your best judgment. If there’s storm warnings, stay home. In the winter, we walk at Onondaga Lake Park or Green Lakes State Park where there are trails plowed for walkers. As a rule of thumb, we don’t walk if the temperature falls below 20°, or if it’s snowy, cold, or raining.
How much does it cost? Nada, nothing. Its FREE! Some parks charge a fee. See our Walk Locations page for that information.
Do I have to bring anything? Yourself, your dog. Dogs must be on leashes (of course). We always clean up after our hounds, so bring dog waste bags. We also ask you bring water for yourself as well as your hound.
Are there things I shouldn't bring? Yes, flexi leads. These can cause major problems.
What if I show up late? Sometimes there’s just one path or trail, so you can look for us there. If not, don’t waste the morning. Take a walk, and we’ll see you next weekend!
My greyhound can’t do the walk. Can I still join you? Absolutely!
Are the walks difficult? We try to choose trails that would accomodate all “varieties” of hounds and humans! If there are lots of hills, stairs, or strenuous climbs, then we label those “Adventure Walks.”.
Are they long? Not too long. We try to limit walks to an hour so you have the rest of the day free.
Can I bring my friends? Certainly!
Can I bring my other dog? Of course! We love other breeds! Be cautious, many greyhounds are good with small animals, but occasionally there may be a greyhound who is not. In any situation, always ask the handler of another dog if their dog is good with small animals. The safety of your dog depends on you.
I’m curious about adopting a greyhound. Can I join you at a walk? Absolutely! This is an excellent opportunity for you to meet some greyhounds and talk with us about our greys.
I don’t have a greyhound, but my dog loves walking. Can we join you? Yes! Most certainly! Socialization is wonderful for all dogs!
What’s this “club” thing about? Can I join? At its inception, The Greyhound Walking Club took the term “club” in its title because it wanted its participants to feel like a family. It is not set up as a “member” organization with a member roster, club fees, etc., because we didn’t want anyone to feel excluded (and the cost of member mailings was way beyond its miniscule budget), and we considered all TGWC participants and benefactors as “members.” We invite you to be a part of the TGWC! If you would like more information on becoming involved, visit our Contact page and send us an email.
Anything else I need to know before coming? The Greyhound Walking Club of Central New York is a group of greyhound people who enjoy walking together. All the trails we walk are open to the public. If you join us, you do so at your own risk. Let’s face it, anything can happen anywhere, even right outside your own front door. The health and welfare of yourself and your dog is your responsibility. In the spirit of the GWC, we will help, assist and share knowledge as any friend would do, but the burden of your and your dog’s safety rests with you.
